Twitter Removes Image Cropping: New Tips For Posting Pictures

Sharing photos on Twitter now looks a lot different, thanks to the app getting rid of cropped images on the timeline. Twitter first teased this update in March, with it now widely available for all users.

As much as Twitter is a place for posting quick hot takes, jokes, or random thoughts throughout the day, it's also become a decent platform for sharing photos. Uploading pictures to Twitter is incredibly easy, there are built-in editing tools, and the quality of photo uploads is considerably higher than Instagram. Where Instagram posts are capped at 566 x 1350, Twitter recently added support for 4K images. All of that has made Twitter a more attractive platform for people that like sharing pictures online, and thanks to another update that's rolling out now, it's getting even better.

This past March, Twitter announced it was working on changing the way photos were presented on the timeline. Previously, uploading a single image to Twitter would heavily crop it — forcing people to tap on the specific tweet if they wanted to see the full picture. This resulted in some fun 'open for a surprise' memes, but it's always been a cumbersome experience. Thankfully, cropped images are no more. Twitter confirmed on May 5 that uncropped images are now available to everyone on Android and iOS, making image sharing on Twitter that much easier.

Tips For Uploading Images To Twitter Without Cropping

As exciting as this news is, it does come with a couple of quirks that aren't immediately apparent. For starters, image cropping is still present on Twitter's desktop site. Twitter has said that it's "working on bringing it [uncropped images] to web soon," but there's no ETA for when that'll happen. Furthermore, not every single image can be shared without cropping on the timeline. Twitter notes that images with 2:1 and 3:4 aspect ratios are shown in their full glory, but as images go outside of those ratios, there may still be some cropping.

Most images uploaded to Twitter should be displayed with little-to-no cropping from this point forward, but that safeguard is to make sure people don't abuse the change. Some users upload photos that are outrageously long or tall, and while this can result in a funny picture, forcing people to scroll through those things on their timeline would be far from ideal. This ensures that people's timelines don't get completely destroyed by those outliers, while 'normal' photo uploads get to be showcased as intended.
